Shimano STEPS Motor / drive

W010

Drive unit overtemperature

The drive unit has detected an internal temperature above its normal operating range, typically after long steep climbs in high assist modes or in hot weather. To protect the motor, the system reduces the assist power until the unit has cooled down. This is a protective warning, not a defect.

Roadside self-help

  1. Take a break and let the motor cool down; do not continue riding with assist enabled until the temperature has dropped.
  2. Use a lower assist mode on long climbs to avoid recurrence.
  3. If the warning appears repeatedly without heavy load, have the system checked by a dealer.

Possible causes

  • High ambient temperature or direct sunlight medium

How to read e-bike error codes

Unlike cars (OBD-II), e-bike codes are manufacturer-specific: the same number means something different on a Bosch than on a Shimano system. What matters is always the combination of drive system and code.
